Installing Flex Wiki
.
Summary

Installation from the FlexWikiBinaries

The FlexWikiBinaries consists of the following pieces:

Check the SystemRequirements before proceeding.

Compatibility

To install FlexWiki in a new virtual directory on your system:

  1. Download the binary distributable from FlexWikiBinaries
  2. Create a folder called FlexWiki and extract the web application into it (it can be anywhere on any of your hard disks, it doesn't have to be under Inetpub\wwwroot)
  3. Open IIS Manager and locate the Default Web Site, if you don't have IIS and you have VS .NET see HowToBeforeIIS
  4. Right click on Default Web Site and choose New -> Virtual Directory...
  5. Set the Alias to FlexWiki, set the Directory to the FlexWiki folder you created in Step 2 and check read and run as the access permissions. (In Oct 2004, the folder to share seems to be called "web" in the FlexWiki folder.) Note: If you've downloaded and unzipped the source code of FlexWiki, then the Alias should be set to point to the FlexWiki.Web directory within the FlexWIki directory you created in step 2.
  6. In IIS 5.1, you may need to add 'default.aspx' to the default documents list in the Documents Tab of the Virtual Directory Properties
  7. In Windows Explorer right-click on the folder (WikiBases in v1.8 or Namspaces in v2.0), contained in the FlexWiki folder created in Step 2, and choose Sharing and Security and go to the Security tab. Note: As for the previous step, if you've downloaded and installed the source code of FlexWiki, you should right-click and select Sharing and Security on the FlexWiki.Web subdirectory instead.
  8. Give account ASPNET (if using IIS 5.0) or account NETWORK SERVICE (if IIS 6.0) Modify permission (setting this will enable several others below it). Then click on the Advanced button and tick the box to Replace permission entries on all child objects [1][2]
  9. Give the same account the default (Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read) permissions to the images and emoticon folders if you didn't install under inetpub\wwwroot. Otherwise images in the UI will not show up.
  10. You should now be able to navigate to [http://[domainname]/FlexWiki] (always use domain name, not "localhost") and see your new FlexWiki installation. 4 Then all you need to do is set up your NamespaceMap and namespaces according to the instructions on the website.

Alternatively, you can go to SettingUpFlexWikiInAnExistingVirtualServer.

To fix This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. errors:

  1. Right click on your virtual directory and select the Properties option.
  2. In the Properties dialog that appears (It should be on the Virtual Directory tab when it opens, if it is not then click that tab). The bottom section is labeled Application settings And has three buttons along the right side.
  3. The topmost of the three buttons should be labeled Create. Click it.
  4. Set "Execute Permissions" to "Scripts Only".
  5. At this point my site loaded correctly on Windows 2003 /w SP1

Note 1

If you are logged on to a domain when you come to add accounts the default location is set to the domain you are logged on to. You need to click on the Locations button and change the location to your local machine. The accounts are called 'ASPNET' and 'NETWORK SERVICE'. (Or you can just specify the account names explicitly to include the local machine name: e.g. MACHINENAME\aspnet)

Note 2

By default Simple File Sharing is enabled under Windows XP. In order to specify an Access Control List (ACL) like this you will need to DisableSimpleFileSharing. NOTE: You can not disable simple file sharing in Windows XP Home Edition, the DisableSimpleFileSharing method only works in the Professional Edition.

Note: 3

If your site will not load any aspx pages (i.e. if http://localhost/FlexWiki/admin/default.aspx loads without errors but displays an empty page), verify that ASP.NET is actually installed. On Windows XP run the following:

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis -i

Note: 4

If links (e.g. WikiWiki) to flexwiki.com on the first page are broken, it's not a problem with your server config -- simply edit the content on the first page to change the @flexWiki macro to point to http://www.flexwiki.com/default.apx/FlexWiki/$$$

Note: 5

On Win2k3 Server/IIS 6.0, also use the IIS manager and go to the Web Services Extensions tree and have ASP.NET v(whatever) set to "allowed".

If you have problem installing, please email the FlexWikiUsersList, describing your InstallationProblems. Somebody should be able to help.

Return to the QuickSetup page or view InstallationQuestions or InstallationProblems.
